The Practice of Meditation: Day 11

Did I ever tell you the one about the eaglet?  Just kidding!  You probably went back to Day 10 to see if you skipped Day 11.  Whatever!  Did you know that chickens get depressed?  Would you believe there is a lot of information on the internet about how happy or sad chickens are!  It’s true!  Google it!  I digress!  Sorry!

Seriously, sadness or depression is a “state of mind.”  A “state of mind” is defined as an “emotional condition.”

That’s too deep for me!  Here it is in a “nutshell.”  Do the things around you make you happier than the things inside you?  If what is going on inside you doesn’t make you happy, then what is going on outside you will never make you truly happy.  Translation on aisle 6, please!  Meditation deals with what is going on inside us first.  When we are meditating on God and His goodness, we strengthen our relationship with God and when our relationship with God is right, everything outside changes for the better.  Meditation makes us focus on the condition of our relationship with God.  We face reality instead of running from it.  As the condition of our relationship improves our state of mind improves.  Why? Because our mind is being renewed!  Do you struggle with depression?  (I’m not a licensed counselor, just a minister!) Are you discouraged a lot?  Focus more on what is going on in you.  Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart (Psalms 139:23-24).  With God’s grace and mercy face things (anger, bitterness, jealousy, loss, hurt…) in the way that God would want you to.

Today: In Matthew 6:33 Jesus tells us to seek His kingdom first!  How can you make your relationship with God a priority in your daily life?
